The Metal Type
The Metal Type
I confess! Any denial would be futile since by now you will have discovered all the spelling pho-paz and the grammatical abominations which have cheated their way into this book despite diligent proof-reading. Not to mention the comma disaster. You may think, well, writing a book, fine and dandy, but there has to be some order. Why would someone have gone to all the trouble of inventing proper spelling with all its rules if these weren’t even kept by those earning a living by putting pen to paper and stringing words together? Your are so exact and thorough that you don’t miss anything, whether it’s my poor spelling or a grain of dirt which has managed to establish a cosy existence under your wardrobe. On Saturdays, during the weekly deep-cleaning – duration: 90 minutes; start: 9.15am – this grain of dirt will have to bite the dust just like all the other bits of dirt which have dared to resist the invisible, superior and all but universal order whose laws are known and understood by you and you alone. If eggs are on the breakfast menu one can rely on the yolks being ever so slightly firm around the edges and having just the right degree of softness inside. You will spread the butter on you bread so that it forms an even surface like virgin snow on a football field during a still winter’s night. You take ample time for breakfast, the same time you take for getting dressed, since an immaculate appearance is as important to you as leaving the dining table in a pristine condition.
Your choice of clothes is less about attracting attention; in contrast, it’s rather important to you not to be conspicuous. What matters is always being dressed perfectly and appropriately whatever the occasion. Hence, elegant, subtle garments form the foundation of your wardrobe. But finding a creased shirt in it would be as unlikely as finding a hair protruding from one of your nostrils or a pimple on your forehead not covered by foundation. And because everything has its price, and flawlessness in particular, and because for
